Medical researchers are finding more and more links between poor oral health and systemic problems such as heart attack, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, low birth-weight babies, and birthing complications.

About 70 percent of the U.S. population has some form of gum disease, whether they know it or not and an even larger portion of Americans over the age of 39 have been affected by tooth decay. These problems are often caused by poor oral hygiene and poor diet.

While more evidence is still needed to confirm a causal relationship between oral and systemic health, a connection is definitely evident. One of the more researched connections has been that between oral health and heart disease. Many researchers believe that oral bacteria may travel through the bloodstream and cause inflammation in other parts of the body.

If that isn’t reason enough to keep your mouth clean, maybe saving money will keep you brushing and flossing. Studies have shown that good oral health can save a person 20 to 25 percent in health care costs and add up to a decade onto their life!
